Texture is a shadow story - which is why it changes with the light and the angle

Most people first notice their skin texture in a car mirror, a lift, or a bathroom at a friend's place - not at home. That is not your skin being inconsistent. Uneven texture and the look of old scarring are largely read by the eye as shadow, and shadow depends entirely on where the light is coming from.

Why the same skin looks different room to room

A smooth surface bounces light evenly. An uneven one - raised, indented, or built up with surface skin - catches light on one side and drops shadow on the other. Flat, overhead or side-on light exaggerates that. Soft, even light from the front hides it. Nothing about the skin changed in the ten seconds between rooms.

This matters practically, because it means texture cannot be honestly tracked in whatever light you happen to be standing in. If you want to know whether anything is shifting, look in the same spot, at the same time of day, at the same angle - and compare it to how it looked when you started, not to how it looked yesterday.

What is actually being addressed

Texture and the appearance of scarring can come from past breakouts or damage, from natural ageing and slower renewal, and from sun exposure with a build-up of surface skin. Those are two different layers of the same problem.

At Skin Biology in New Lambton Heights, fractional RF resurfacing is our main non-invasive option for uneven texture and the look of old scarring, gently warming the deeper layers to support the skin's own renewal over time. Regular hydrodermabrasion and microdermabrasion facials work on the surface build-up that sits above it.

We are honest about the rest: results are gradual, individual and never guaranteed, and we do not promise to remove scarring.

If you have been judging your skin in five different lights and cannot tell where you stand, that is a fair reason to have it looked at properly in one.
