Judging your pigmentation progress in the bathroom mirror is the fastest way to talk yourself out of a plan that is working
Uneven tone does not look the same twice. Bathroom downlights, an overcast morning by the window, the front-facing camera in a car park - each one shows you a different version of the same skin. That is not your skin changing through the day. It is light hitting it differently, and it is the single biggest reason people misread whether a pigmentation plan is doing anything.
Why the light you check in decides what you see
Overhead light casts downward, which deepens anything with a shadow and flattens anything without one. Soft, even daylight does close to the opposite. So a patch that looks obvious at 7am under the bathroom light can look almost settled at 3pm outside - same skin, same day, no treatment in between.
If you assess your tone in whichever mirror you happen to walk past, you are comparing readings taken under different conditions and calling the difference progress or failure. Neither conclusion is reliable.
The fix is unglamorous: pick one light and one spot, and only judge there. Same window, same time of day, same distance, no makeup. Compare against how your skin looked when you started - not against a flawless target, and not against yesterday's mirror. (Sun spots and marks left by past breakouts also follow different paths, which we have covered separately.)
What the rhythm looks like in practice
At our New Lambton Heights skin studio, the approach is non-invasive and science-led. Regular resurfacing facials refresh the surface and support a brighter look, while fractional RF can support more even-looking texture over time. Both are built as a repeating schedule rather than a single appointment, with the spacing set at your consultation and reviewed as we go, because suitability and pacing are assessed individually.
Broadly, surface freshness and overall brightness tend to be the earlier shifts, while more even-looking texture and tone develop slowly. We will not put a number on either - results are gradual and vary from person to person, and we do not promise to remove pigmentation.
Daily SPF runs underneath all of it. Sun exposure over time is the main driver of uneven tone in this climate, so SPF is what holds the starting line steady while the resurfacing works. Without it you are treating and re-driving the same thing at once.
The check that comes first
Anything new, changing, itchy or unusual goes to a GP or skin-cancer clinic before any cosmetic treatment. That is not a formality - it comes ahead of the tone conversation entirely.
And if you are not sure what you are looking at, that is worth sorting out in person rather than guessing from a mirror in bad light.
