Congestion and acne can look the same - telling them apart changes what helps

Congestion and acne can look the same - telling them apart changes what helps

The bumps left by everyday congestion and the bumps of genuine acne can look almost identical in the mirror - which is why the harsh routine people reach for so often makes the wrong call.

Two things that look the same

Congestion is build-up: oil and dead surface skin collecting in the pore, often coming and going with your habits and skin type. Acne is a medical condition - persistent, sometimes painful, sometimes scarring, and driven by more than the surface alone, with hormones and skin type playing a part.

On the face they can look the same. What separates them is how they behave over time: congestion clears and returns, while acne tends to stay, hurt or scar.

Why the difference matters

It decides the next step. Mild, congestion-related breakouts can respond to gentle resurfacing facials that lift surface build-up and support clearer-feeling skin, on the face or the body. Persistent, painful or scarring breakouts are a medical issue best seen by a GP or dermatologist, and we will say so. A facial does not cure acne, and we would never claim it does.

The common wrong move

Scrubbing harder. Congestion-prone skin reads as "dirty," so the instinct is to strip it - but rough scrubbing tends to inflame the surface and can leave skin looking worse, not clearer. Gentle and consistent does more than harsh and occasional.

If you are not sure which one you are looking at, that is exactly what a skin consultation is for - a proper look in person, and honest advice on whether a facial suits or a GP is the better first stop.
