Congested or inflamed? Why the state of your breakout decides if a facial helps this week
Not every breakout is asking for the same thing, and treating an inflamed pimple the same way you'd treat a patch of congestion can just aggravate it further.
Two different states, one label
"Acne-prone" covers a lot of ground. Congestion looks like blackheads, rough patches and a dull, textured surface from a build-up of oil and dead skin. Active inflammation looks different again - red, raised, sore, sometimes pus-filled. Both can sit on the same face, often at the same time, but they are not the same problem.
Why this matters when you book a facial
Gentle resurfacing facials work by lifting congestion and refining the surface, which suits skin that is congested but otherwise calm. Run that same mechanical exfoliation over skin that is actively inflamed and sore, and it can aggravate the area rather than help it. So the question we ask at consultation isn't just "is this skin acne-prone" - it's what your skin is actually doing that week.
What we do instead
We treat the calm, congested areas and hold off on anything actively inflamed until it settles. That might mean a full facial one visit and a lighter, more selective approach the next, depending on where your skin is at.
When it's beyond a facial
We're a skin studio, not a medical clinic. If breakouts are persistent, painful or leaving scarring, we'll say so honestly and point you towards a GP or dermatologist alongside anything we do here.
If you're not sure whether your skin is in a congested phase or an inflamed one, that's exactly what a skin consultation is for. We'll look at your acne and breakouts as they are today and build a plan around that, not a generic label.
